Bangladesh’s Test Squad Gets a Shake-Up: Tanzim In, Taskin and Litton Out for Zimbabwe Clash

As Bangladesh gears up for their return to Test cricket, fast bowler Tanzim Hasan Sakib has received his maiden Test call-up, replacing an injured Taskin Ahmed for the upcoming match against Zimbabwe. The first Test kicks off in Sylhet on April 20, and the 15-member squad reflects both fresh energy and a return of key experienced names.

Taskin, one of Bangladesh’s premier pace options, has been ruled out due to a left Achilles tendon issue and is currently undergoing rehabilitation. His absence opens the door for 21-year-old Tanzim, who has impressed selectors with his performance in the shorter formats.

Tanzim has shown a lot of promise in white-ball cricket. He’s hungry, aggressive, and has a knack for taking wickets,” said Gazi Ashraf Hossain, Bangladesh’s chief selector. “We believe he deserves this opportunity, especially with the kind of energy he brings to the attack.”

Litton Das Given Leave for PSL Stint

In another notable update, wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das has been granted a break to participate in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). He is set to join Karachi Kings for the tournament that begins April 11. Litton, who played in Bangladesh’s last Test series against West Indies, will be absent from this red-ball assignment.

Ashraf clarified that the decision was strategic and considerate of the team’s broader schedule. “There’s a lot of cricket on the calendar, and we need to manage workloads. Litton’s participation in the PSL was approved to ensure he stays sharp and fresh for future series.”

Key Returns: Shanto and Mushfiqur Back in the Mix

Bangladesh last played Test cricket in November 2024 during a two-match series against West Indies. Returning to the squad are Najmul Hossain Shanto, who resumes his role as Test captain, and Mushfiqur Rahim, both of whom missed the previous series due to injury.

Also back in contention is offspinner Nayeem Hasan, while pacers Khaled Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud retain their spots. However, Shoriful Islam, Shahadat Hossain, and Hasan Murad have been left out this time.

“We’ve selected this squad with performance and experience in mind,” Ashraf added. “We haven’t done well in home Tests over the past year, and with important matches against Sri Lanka coming up in June, we want to build some consistency.”

Ebadot Hossain Under Observation

Another name under watch is Ebadot Hossain, who has recently returned to domestic cricket following a lengthy injury break. While not in the current squad, selectors have not ruled out his return for future series.

“We’re keeping a close eye on Ebadot,” said Ashraf. “He’s working hard and building his rhythm again. This is just the beginning of a packed season, so there will be chances for everyone.”

Key Player Breakdown

  • Najmul Hossain Shanto (Captain): The left-hander has matured into a dependable top-order batter and will be crucial for setting a solid foundation. His leadership will also be tested in this home series.
  • Mushfiqur Rahim: A veteran of the side, Mushfiqur brings experience and calm in the middle order. His ability to play long innings makes him a key figure.
  • Mehidy Hasan Miraz: A spin-bowling all-rounder who can turn the game on his day with both bat and ball. He’ll be a threat on Sylhet’s spinning surface.
  • Tanzim Hasan Sakib: The young pacer will be keen to make a strong impression. His pace and movement could surprise Zimbabwe’s batters unfamiliar with him.
  • Nayeem Hasan: A reliable offspinner with good control and variations. He’ll be Bangladesh’s primary spin weapon if the pitch offers turn.
  • Mahmudul Hasan Joy & Zakir Hasan: These young batters are still finding their feet in Test cricket but have shown promise. They’ll need to step up in the absence of Litton.

Match Prediction

Bangladesh go into this Test as clear favorites, especially with the home advantage and the return of key players like Mushfiqur and Shanto. Zimbabwe’s batting lineup has often struggled in subcontinental conditions, and Sylhet’s pitch could assist Bangladesh’s spinners significantly.

Prediction:
Bangladesh to win, likely within four days, provided their batting unit clicks. Expect Mehidy Hasan Miraz or Nayeem Hasan to be among the top wicket-takers, and Shanto or Mushfiqur to lead with the bat.
