Afghanistan and Bangladesh are in discussions to finalize a three-match T20I series in October 2025, marking a fresh attempt to stage a series that has been postponed multiple times. The series will serve as crucial preparation for both teams ahead of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, which is set to be held in India and Sri Lanka.
Reviving a Postponed Series
The two cricket boards have been engaged in discussions, with early October emerging as the likely window for the series. A Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official confirmed that negotiations with the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) have resumed and will continue after Ramadan to finalize the details.
“We have already started our discussion with Afghanistan Cricket Board regarding the series that was postponed earlier. We hope to discuss further after Ramadan and are looking at a three-match T20I series as part of our preparation for the T20 World Cup,” a BCB official told Cricbuzz.
An ACB official added that the scheduling discussions are ongoing, with the October 2-12 window being considered.
“If you look at the FTP (Future Tours Programme), you will find that there has to be something in there, and we are discussing to finalize the date and itinerary,” the ACB official said.
Previous Attempts and Postponements
The series was originally planned as a multi-format tour in July 2024, where Afghanistan was supposed to host Bangladesh for two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is. However, that tour was postponed after Bangladesh cited workload management concerns.
Later, the ACB proposed a white-ball series—three ODIs and three T20Is—in July-August 2024 at Greater Noida, India. But the BCB declined, citing unfavorable weather conditions in that region during that period.
As a result, the two teams only played a three-match ODI series in the UAE in November 2024 as part of their preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy.
Future Series in the Works
While both boards are eager to go ahead with the October 2025 T20I series, discussions are also ongoing about rescheduling the two-Test series at a later date. Given the busy international calendar, finding a suitable window for the longer format remains a challenge.
With Afghanistan and Bangladesh both aiming to fine-tune their squads ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, this proposed three-match T20I series in October 2025 will be a crucial fixture in their preparations.
