Afghanistan Cricket Board Partners with Abu Dhabi Cricket for Five-Year Hosting Agreement

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and the Abu Dhabi Cricket and Sports Hub (ADCSH) have signed a five-year destination support agreement, designating Abu Dhabi as the home base for Afghanistan’s training camps and age-group matches. This agreement, which extends until 2029, could also pave the way for Afghanistan’s senior men’s team to host bilateral international series in the UAE, in collaboration with the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB).

A Strategic Move for Afghanistan Cricket

The agreement was formalized following discussions involving the ACB, ADCSH, and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC). All parties reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing opportunities for Afghanistan’s cricketers on the international stage. Alongside providing world-class facilities, the agreement also supports the ACB’s global operations and the development of player pathways.

Matt Boucher, Chief Executive of ADCSH, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating:
“Our facilities have already welcomed the world’s best players, and this agreement strengthens our commitment to nurturing global sporting talent. We’ve enjoyed hosting Afghanistan over the past few years and are delighted to make Abu Dhabi their second home.”

A Turning Point for Afghanistan Cricket

ACB Chief Executive Naseeb Khan described the partnership as a “turning point” for Afghanistan cricket. He highlighted the impact of having access to Abu Dhabi’s premium facilities, particularly for age-group teams, which will play a crucial role in shaping Afghanistan’s cricketing future.

“The opportunity to now focus on Abu Dhabi as our training base and our home for age-group participation will allow us to elevate Afghanistan’s sporting success and build a strong national future for the game of cricket in our country,” said Khan.

Overcoming Geopolitical Challenges

Due to the political situation in Afghanistan, the country has never been able to establish itself as a regular destination for international cricket tours. As a result, Afghanistan’s men’s team has relied on neutral venues in India—including Dehradun, Lucknow, and Greater Noida—and the UAE for their home fixtures.

Abu Dhabi has already hosted three of Afghanistan’s Test matches, including two against Zimbabwe in March 2021 and one against Ireland in February 2024. Additionally, Afghanistan has hosted several ODIs and T20Is in both India and the UAE.

Looking Ahead

This new agreement provides stability for Afghanistan cricket and ensures consistent access to world-class venues. It also reflects the UAE’s ongoing commitment to being a central hub for international cricket. With Abu Dhabi now serving as Afghanistan’s official second home, the partnership is expected to strengthen player development and increase Afghanistan’s global competitiveness in the years to come.
