Ashleigh Gardner Ruled Out of New Zealand T20I Series Due to Finger Fracture

Australia’s star allrounder Ashleigh Gardner has been ruled out of the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand after scans confirmed a fracture in her right index finger. She will return to Sydney for further medical evaluation and specialist advice, Cricket Australia announced on Saturday.

In Gardner’s absence, Ellyse Perry will serve as vice-captain, supporting skipper Tahlia McGrath for the remainder of the series. Meanwhile, Charli Knott, the 22-year-old uncapped allrounder from Queensland, has been called up as Gardner’s replacement for the final two matches.

How the Injury Happened

Gardner sustained the injury during the 17th over of New Zealand’s innings in the first T20I in Auckland on Friday. While attempting to catch a return drive from Sophie Devine, she got both hands to the ball but couldn’t hold on, immediately signaling discomfort. After receiving on-field treatment, she left the field and did not return to bat during Australia’s successful chase.

Australia Takes Series Lead

Despite Gardner’s early exit, Australia cruised to an eight-wicket victory, chasing 138 with 39 balls to spare. Beth Mooney led the charge with a blistering 75 not out from 42 balls, while Georgia Voll contributed a quick 50 off 31 deliveries, sealing the win comfortably.

The second T20I is scheduled for Sunday, with the final match set to take place on Wednesday. Australia currently leads the three-match series 1-0 and will look to wrap up the series despite Gardner’s absence.

Gardner’s Absence a Big Blow

Gardner’s injury is a significant loss for Australia, given her all-round capabilities. With her ability to deliver breakthroughs with the ball and power-hitting in the middle order, her absence leaves a gap in the team’s balance.

Charli Knott, known for her aggressive batting and useful off-spin, now has an opportunity to make her international debut and showcase her talent on the big stage.
