As Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) prepare to launch their IPL 2025 campaign, star spinner Varun Chakravarthy remains optimistic about their chances of defending the title. Despite a new captain and a revamped coaching staff, Varun believes KKR’s strong squad and international reinforcements make them contenders again.
“We will look to defend [the title]. We have a great squad and great batsmen too,” Varun said on the eve of the season opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens.
Strengthened Squad Boosts KKR’s Title Defense
KKR have bolstered their lineup with Quinton de Kock, Anrich Nortje, Spencer Johnson, Moeen Ali, and Rovman Powell, adding depth to their already formidable core.
Reflecting on last season’s mixed performances, Varun emphasized the need to start fresh and not dwell on past success:
“Every match is different in the IPL. You have to treat it as a new tournament and start from scratch.”
Chakravarthy vs. Kohli: A Battle to Watch
One of the most anticipated duels of the opening game will be between Varun Chakravarthy and Virat Kohli. In their previous IPL encounters, Varun has restricted Kohli to just 40 runs in 39 balls, dismissing him once.

“I’m definitely excited to bowl against Virat bhai. He has batted well against me, but I want to do better. RCB have a quality team, but we’ve prepared well.”

While Varun didn’t reveal specific details, he hinted at having new variations to deploy this season. However, he stressed that sequencing—the order in which he delivers his different balls—is the key to his success.
“The ball can deviate in three ways: left, right, or straight. The real strategy lies in choosing and sequencing these deliveries effectively,” he explained.
Varun’s ability to bowl at any stage—whether during the powerplay, middle overs, or death—makes him a vital asset. He confirmed that he has discussed his role extensively with KKR’s new captain and is ready to adapt as required.
The Narine-Chakravarthy Combo: KKR’s Spin Fortress
A significant part of KKR’s dominance last year was the lethal spin partnership between Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, who combined for 38 wickets. Varun expressed his admiration for Narine’s consistency and is eager to team up again:
“I don’t need to compliment him—he’s a legend. He was the MVP last year, and he looks ready to dominate again.”
