Phil Simmons will continue as the head coach of Bangladesh until the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup, following a two-year contract extension from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Initially appointed as interim coach until the 2025 Champions Trophy, the BCB’s decision to offer Simmons a longer tenure reflects their confidence in his leadership.
Expressing his excitement about the extended role, Simmons, 61, said, “I am delighted to be given the opportunity to work with Bangladesh cricket on a long-term basis. The talent within this team is undeniable, and I believe we have the potential to achieve great things together. Having already worked with some exceptional players, I am inspired by their skill and passion for the game. Together, we can take Bangladesh cricket to new heights.”
Mixed Results as Interim Coach
Simmons’ tenure as interim coach has delivered mixed results. Under his leadership, Bangladesh secured a Test and a T20I series victory against the West Indies but struggled in major tournaments, exiting the 2025 Champions Trophy in the group stage after losses to India and New Zealand.
Despite the setbacks, Simmons remains optimistic. “My time with the Bangladesh team over the past few months has been incredibly rewarding. The energy, commitment, and ability within this group have been nothing short of impressive. I’m excited to continue helping these players reach their full potential,” he said.
A Clear Path Forward
Simmons’ appointment ends speculation about his future with Bangladesh cricket. As part of his commitment, he will no longer coach Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), a position he held since December 2023.
His appointment in October came on the same day the BCB suspended former coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, signaling a new direction for the team.
A Wealth of Coaching Experience
A former West Indies cricketer from the 1990s, Simmons brings extensive coaching experience to his role. He is one of only four coaches to oversee 400 international matches and has previously led teams from Zimbabwe, Ireland, and Afghanistan. His most notable achievement came during his second stint with West Indies, guiding them to victory in the 2016 T20 World Cup.
With the BCB’s backing and a talented squad at his disposal, Simmons aims to drive Bangladesh towards greater success on the international stage, with the 2027 ODI World Cup as a key milestone.
