Rain Threat Looms Over IPL 2025 Opener Between KKR and RCB

The much-anticipated IPL 2025 season opener between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, faces a rain threat as weather forecasts predict thunderstorms and gusty winds on March 22.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an “orange alert” for Kolkata, warning of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning leading up to the match. Rain has already disrupted preparations for both teams, with their Friday training sessions cut short due to sporadic showers. Earlier in the week, a KKR intra-squad practice game was also washed out after just one innings.

Weather Concerns on Match Day

The heaviest rainfall is expected on Friday (match eve) and Saturday, the day of the season opener. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 PM toss and a 7:30 PM start. According to IPL rules, there is an extra hour available for time extensions during the league stage, allowing play to continue until midnight if required. For a match to be valid, each side must complete a minimum of five overs. If the match is abandoned due to rain, both teams will receive one point each.

Upcoming Fixtures for KKR and RCB

Following the season opener, KKR will head to Guwahati to play against the Rajasthan Royals on March 26, while RCB will travel to Chennai to face Chennai Super Kings on March 28.

Adding to the excitement, there is also an opening ceremony scheduled before the toss, which could also be affected if the rain persists.

Fans and teams will be keeping a close eye on the weather, hoping the rain holds off to allow a full contest between these two powerhouse franchises.
