New Zealand has been forced to make significant changes ahead of its ODI series against Pakistan after Tom Latham sustained a fractured right hand during a training session with Michael Bracewell. Latham, who was slated to lead the side alongside Mitchell Santner at the IPL, will now miss the series, with Bracewell continuing as captain—a role he successfully fulfilled during the recent T20 series.
In Latham’s absence, wicketkeeping duties have been reassigned to Mitch Hay. Meanwhile, Henry Nicholls has been called up to strengthen the squad, bringing valuable experience and recent form after returning from a three-month injury lay-off.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead commented on the evolving squad dynamics:
“We’ve had to be flexible this tour with numerous players unavailable for different reasons. This situation offers opportunities for other players, and we’re excited to welcome Rhys into the environment for the first time, as well as having Henry back in the fold.”
He further added, “It’s obviously disappointing to lose Tom as captain on the eve of the series, and we wish him a speedy recovery. The side is in safe hands with Michael, who has done a great job through the T20 series.”
Adding to the squad adjustments, Will Young will step aside after the first match in his hometown of Napier as he prepares for the arrival of his first child. In his place, uncapped 23-year-old Rhys Mariu—who boasts an impressive first-class average of 61.73—has been named as cover. Additionally, uncapped players Muhammad Abbas and Nick Kelly have earned call-ups, while Kane Williamson has opted to make himself unavailable.
New Zealand enters the series riding high from a 4-1 victory in the T20 series, and the revamped squad now faces the challenge of maintaining momentum and adapting to these last-minute changes. With Bracewell at the helm and fresh talent being introduced, the team is focused on leveraging this depth to secure success in the upcoming ODIs against Pakistan.
